The largest of the Leeward Islands, Martinique is 425 square miles (1,101 square km). The southern part of the island is all rolling hills and sugarcane fields; it's also where you'll find the best beaches and most development. In the north are craggy cliffs, lush vegetation, and one of the Caribbean's largest volcanoes, Mont Pelée looming over the harbor town of St Pierre,  also know as the
“Petit Paris “ back in the early 1900.
